For years Allison Russell and JT Nero’s respective bands, Po’ Girl and JT and the Clouds, have collaborated extensively, so Birds of Chicago—a blend of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classic soul—is a very natural progression.
Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones is a fine thing. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar, it’s chilling. Fired by a full band, as it is for these New Mexico performances, it’s a full tilt revival.
